- Trim and remove dead limbs from trees and shrubs
Bad weather can cause weak trees or branches to break and damage your home, car, utility lines or someone walking on your property.
- Maintain steps and handrails
Repair broken stairs and banisters so nobody falls. Add rubber strips to steps if needed.
- Inspect roof
Check roof for loose shingles and missing or rusted flashing. Check chimney for loose or missing mortar and obstacles. Check roof boots (covers over vents) to make sure there are no cracks or leaks.
- Maintain your gutters
Check gutters for debris so water can properly drain to prevent wood rot, pest infestation, foundation damage, etc.
- Inspect exterior walls
Look for possible weather-related damage, like cracks and loose or crumbling mortar. Repair as needed.
- Windows and doors
Inspect and repair any loose or damaged window or door frames. Install weather stripping or caulking around windows and doors to prevent drafts and lower heating bills. Caulking helps keep your house weather-tight, lowers your heating bills and can also help keep insects and rodents out of your house. Change summer screens to cool weather storm windows and doors
Check window locks. All exterior doors should have deadbolt locks.
- Maintain your pipe
Wrap pipes with heating tape every winter and insulate unfinished rooms such as garages if they contain exposed pipes. Check pipes for cracks and leaks and have any damage repaired immediately to prevent costlier repairs later.
- Check your heating systems
Maintain furnace, fireplace, boiler, water heater, space heater and wood-burning stove and have your heating system serviced every year. Change your heating and air conditioning filters Check appliances inspected for gas leaks and adequate ventilation.
- Check insulation
Your attic should be five to 10 degrees warmer than outside air, otherwise too much heat escapes and causes frozen water to melt and refreeze which can result in a collapsed roof.
- Clean and vacuum dust from vents, baseboard heaters and cold-air returns
Dust build-up in ducts is a major cause of indoor pollutants and can increase incidences of cold-weather illnesses. Clean your ducts to better your heating system’s efficiency as well as to reduce household dust and to provide relief to those with respiratory problems.
- Check Safety equipment
Make sure all smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers are in good working order. If you don’t have a carbon monoxide detector, install one. Make sure there are working night-lights at the top and bottom of all stairs. Tile and painted wood or concrete stairs can be slippery when wet or when a person’s shoes are wet. Resurface the treads with slip-resistant strips near the stair nosing. All stairs of at least three risers should have a handrail.
- Replace your furnace filter
Furnace filters need to be replaced frequently to allow your heating systems to operate properly.
- Bathroom/kitchen plumbing fixtures
Check caulking around your bathroom/kitchen fixtures to prevent water from seeping into the sub-flooring. Check for cracked or missing caulk around the base of your toilet, bath tub, and bathroom cabinets. Check and seal gaps between your bathroom fixtures and flooring material can prevent damage
- Hot Water Heater
Drain hot water heater and remove sediment from the bottom of the tank. Check thermostat’s heat sensor, contact points, and contacts.
